Zero impact cement mortars and adhesives for ceramics

22/05/2023 – In an increasingly sustainable construction world, the client, the designer and the professional choose to build using zero impact products* on climate change, with high performance and long-lasting.

Mapei responds to new market demands with the innovative Zero line which includes fourteen products – four stickers it’s a grout for laying ceramic tiles and stone materials, along with nine cement mortars for building – whose emissions of CO2 measured along the life cycle have been offset by 2023 with the purchase of certified carbon credits to support renewable energy projects and forest protection.

Zero Ceramic line
Ten years ago Mapei was the first to introduce the offsetting of CO emissions2 with its best-selling ceramic cement adhesive, Keraflex Maxi S1 Zero. In 2022, thanks to the decision to also include the iconic fugitive Ultracolor Plus among the plywood products, Mapei has proposed the first carbon neutral system for laying ceramic tiles to the entire supply chain. Today, thanks to the introduction of S1 class stickers compensatedit is also possible to lay large format tiles in full respect of the planet and the environment.

Zero Construction Line
Building products Zero Mapei line combine sustainability and durability. Through the fatigue tests carried out with dynamic cyclic loads carried out by an independent external laboratory, it has been demonstrated that the malte Zero Mapei they have a greater resistance to cracking than ordinary concrete, even of high quality.

Thanks to this result, it emerges how the use of these materials determines an extension of the useful life of the structure as they prevent the aggressive agents, present in the environment, from easily penetrating and degrading the restored structures. Without stopping at this excellent result, Mapei has optimized the formula for lower the carbon footprint of products and then compensated for the remaining one.

Product and process environmental sustainability
Fundamental to the creation of the new Zero line was the contribution of Mapei’s Corporate Environmental Sustainability team which, within the Corporate Research Center in Milan, is totally dedicated to the environmental sustainability of products and processes.

The team measures the environmental impacts of products throughout their life cycle, through the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) methodology, the results of which are reported in certified documents, the Environmental Product Declarations (EPD), which it now has over the 80% of Mapei products. It also stimulates the Laboratories to create increasingly low environmental impact products by researching, right from the formulation, solutions to reduce the consumption of raw materials and to use more and more recycled materials.

It is also responsible for the selection of compensation projects and other methods to mitigate the environmental impact of production, while continuing to guarantee the quality and durability of the works.

*By “zero impact on climate change” Mapei means that the CO2 emissions measured along the life cycle of the products in the Zero line for the year 2023 using the LCA methodology, verified and certified with the EPDs, have been compensated with the purchase of certified carbon credits to support renewable energy projects and forest protection. A commitment to the planet, people and biodiversity. For more details on the calculation of emissions and climate mitigation projects, financed through certified carbon credits, click here.
