Prague – President Miloš Zeman will meet today via video conference with the chairman of the ODS and the candidate of the parliamentary majority for the new prime minister, Petr Fiala. Fiala wants to inform the hospitalized Zeman about the process of forming the government of the Spolu coalitions (ODS, KDU-ČSL, TOP 09) and Pirates with Mayors. He welcomed the president’s statement on Friday that he was ready to appoint him prime minister.

Zeman told the Frequency 1 radio station from the Central Military Hospital in a telephone interview that there would be no problem with Fiala’s appointment as chairman of the new cabinet. The current Prime Minister Andrej Babiš (YES) is not interested in becoming prime minister, he reminded. Zeman also said he would do everything to get the government formed as soon as possible.

Fiala wants to inform the president that the representatives of both coalitions have agreed on the main program principles and are ready to form a functioning government as soon as possible. The government’s coalition agreement will be signed by representatives of the five parties on Monday before the inaugural meeting of the new House. Only after its completion will Babiš’s current cabinet YES and the CSSD resign. Zeman then entrusts him with the performance of the function until the appointment of a new government.

Zeman spoke to Babiš by phone on Friday. The prime minister informed him that he considered it useless to seek the mandate to build a new cabinet. Babiš plans to hand over the resignation of his government to Zeman in writing.
