One after another, high-ranking Ukrainian officials are resigning after the press revealed that they were allowed to buy supplies for the army at exorbitant prices.
There are also two corruption cases in the war-torn country.
One of them is a generator procurement scandal, in connection with which the deputy minister responsible for infrastructural developments was dismissed and even arrested. In this case, the suspicion that the person concerned accepted a bribe of 400,000 dollars in order to order the purchase of 40 billion dollars worth of generators from certain companies, which was launched last summer, seems to be well-founded, based on the accusations published in the press, compared to the market prices, seven billion dollars more expensive. He told Bendarzhevsky Antonan expert on the post-Soviet region at Inforadio.
The other scandal erupted in recent days surrounding the food procurement of the Ukrainian army: a company that won a professional tender offered food to the army two or three times more expensively – as part of a complex service – than what market conditions would have justified. According to the professional director of the Oeconomus Economic Research Foundation, the situation is less clear in the latter case, as the Ministry of Defense defends itself by saying that it is a complex service, i.e. not only the procurement of food, but also its delivery – under life-threatening conditions – to those fighting on the front.
The investigation is still ongoing, so according to Anton Bendarzhevskij – although the case is suspicious – it is too early to draw consistent conclusions.
In any case, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyi has already indicated that the dismissal of several ministers and senior officials is expected in connection with the case, while announcements are coming one after another about those voluntarily leaving, whose number rose to almost ten people by early Tuesday afternoon – including deputy ministers and heads of the military administration.
The expert of the region noted: in case of accusations of corruption, it is very difficult for Ukrainian decision-makers to react properly, because if they do nothing, thereby protecting their own people, then they reinforce the accusation that “look, look, how corrupt Ukraine is”.
on the other hand, if the relevant officials are dismissed before the charges are confirmed, then the international media, as well as the Ukrainian press, will communicate the matter in such a way that the level of corruption in the country is high.
Anton Bendarzhevskii also touched on the fact that Zelenskiy basically did not want or dare to make major changes in the leadership in the war situation, because it could have jeopardized the effective operation on the one hand, and on the other hand it could have suggested that there were internal problems.
So there were certainly tensions and problems that they didn’t want to decide on, citing communication reasons
he repeated. However, Zelensky now had the opportunity to replace those people whom he did not want to replace during the year due to some aspect, but now he can do it citing corruption.
