Zelenski calls for accelerated accession to NATO

Ukraine will sign an application for accelerated accession to NATO, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced on Friday, a few minutes after Russia formalized the annexation of four Ukrainian regions, reports AFP.

“We are taking a decisive step by signing Ukraine’s candidacy for accelerated NATO membership,” he said in a video broadcast on social media.

“De facto, we have traveled the road to NATO. De facto, we have already proven compatibility with the standards of the North Atlantic Alliance. They are real for Ukraine. They are real on the battlefield and in every aspect of our interactions. We trust each other, we help and defend each other. This is the North Atlantic Alliance. De facto,” said Zelensky, quoted by Ukrainska Pravda.

“Today, Ukraine submits an application to join NATO to make it de jure. Through a procedure that will be consistent with our value, for the protection of our entire community. On an accelerated basis”, he stated, adding that Ukraine understands that this decision requires the consensus of all members of the Alliance.

The Deputy Prime Minister for European and Euro-Atlantic Integration Olga Stefanişâna previously stated that Ukraine was interested in MAP NATO (The Membership Action Plan) before the large-scale invasion of Russia, now only in the membership of the Alliance.

Before the February 24 invasion, the Kremlin had repeatedly said that Ukraine’s NATO membership was a “red line” for Moscow and that Russia was concerned that Kiev might one day be granted membership in the Northern Alliance. Atlantic.
