Latvian sports talents 16-20 years old will now be able to apply for significant financial support from the Latvian Olympic Committee (LOC) and its partners under a new program launched just this year.

According to the head of the LOC, Georges Tikmers, all sports federations know about the program launched this year without co-financing from the state budget, and it is intended to support young athletes of 16-20 years old.

When providing assistance, they take into account their achievements over the past two years and analyze the development of the applicant as an athlete, as well as his potential for possible participation in the 2024 or 2026 Olympics.

Applications from athletes are accepted until March 6. After that, the LOC board will select three of the six most worthy nominees, who will be awarded a scholarship.

However, all six are expected to receive financial support: the three winners – 25,000 euros per year, three more applicants – 5,000 euros per year.
Athletes included in the Olympic team and those already receiving assistance from the state can participate in the competition.

The new program is still a pilot project, and the LOC provides scholarships for representatives of Olympic sports, as well as crews and teams in individual sports.

According to the head of the LOC, in the future, appropriate funding could be provided to those who are involved in non-Olympic sports.

Athletes continue to prepare for the Tokyo Olympics, and it is highly likely that they will take place. Although there are concerns about qualifications in a pandemic, however, the LOC takes into account that even with successful performances, the Latvian delegation to Tokyo will not be large and may include about 30 people.
