YouTube has just announced that it is starting to use a new technology powered by artificial intelligence to impose age restrictions on more videos, which means for users to log in more often for age verification. The company explains that it decided to take such a step after appeals from many worried parents and various organizations from around the world that suggested that the platform is not safe for children. Of course, YouTube has repeatedly emphasized that the website is not intended for children under the age of 13, and has even launched YouTube Kids, where younger audiences can find content that is right for them, but as it turns out, these are not enough resources to stop resolute youth.
So Google decided to go a step further and take the safety of younger users very seriously, effectively limiting their ability to view content through the main YouTube application. Therefore, now many more films will have age restrictions and they will automatically require verification, which the platform wants to use immediately to establish clear boundaries of content suitable and inappropriate for certain age groups, so that the creators do not feel disadvantaged later. These were developed with the help of experts and consultants from around the world who indicated areas that require adjustment, and the rest, i.e. the allocation of appropriate age categories, will be dealt with by artificial intelligence.
Here, however, we come to the most controversial issue, because when viewing adult materials it is not enough just to enter your date and European Union citizens will have to additionally confirm their identity with an ID card or a credit card. And although YouTube assures that it is not his idea, but the requirements of the EU legislators, some users are greatly appalled by this idea. Perhaps it is because there is a risk related to our data, and maybe because we reveal our true identity, and some people like to function on the Internet completely anonymously. Nevertheless, it does not appear that the media storm will be able to change the decision of Google, which explains the solution:
– When content is age-restricted, YouTube visitors must be logged in and their account must be 18 years or older to view the video. Otherwise, a warning will be displayed and they will be redirected to find age-appropriate content (…) As part of this process, some users in Europe may be asked for additional proof of age when they wish to view adult content. If our systems are unable to determine if a viewer is 18 years or older, we will ask you to provide an identity document or credit card for age verification. This process was created in accordance with Google’s privacy and security principles, the statement reads. What do you think about it? Be sure to let me know in the comments!
