Streaming service Dplay has been replaced with Discovery Plus. You should know this about this ‘new’ streaming service.
From Dplay to Discovery Plus
In the Netherlands you could watch the streaming service Dplay, with programs from Discovery, TLC and Investigation Discovery. For a relatively low amount of 3.99 euros per month, Dplay was a nice service for that. Now Dplay is gone as Discovery has launched Discovery Plus (written as discovery +). This service replaces Dplay.
If you are already a member, not much will change. Your subscription is automatically converted and all things that you could watch via Dplay before can now be checked via Discovery Plus. The costs also remain the same, because Discovery Plus still costs 3.99 euros per month or 39.99 euros per year.
What will change? Mainly that there is more to see. For example, Eurosport has been added to the service, more exclusive international series can be streamed and local content is also being worked on. The first Dutch original become available: Sex Tape with Bobbi Eden. In this, couples try to mend their relationship by filming their love life for a week. Sex Tape Belgium can already be streamed.
Discovery Plus also wants to bet high at this year’s Olympic Games in Tokyo, but it is still the question whether that sporting event will continue given the corona crisis.
What to watch
There is a lot to see on Discovery Plus. Think Discovery Plus originals like Ghost Adventures and Fitness Diaries, Discovery shows like Gold Rush and Deadliest Catch, and TLC’s myriad reality series. You also have programs from channels such as Animal Planet (animals), Paranormal (ghosts), HGTV (odd jobs), Motortrend (cars) and Food Network (food). So Eurosport comes in.
Discovery Plus does have significantly less 4K content compared to competitors such as Netflix or Amazon Prime Video. You can watch the things that can be streamed in 4K without paying extra.
A small tip: you can view the Discovery Plus offer in the app without having to create an account. You will only be asked to log in when you watch an episode. This way you can take a stroll before you decide whether you want a subscription.
De Android-app
The Discovery Plus app has clearly improved compared to Dplay, because it looks sleek and beautiful. The main screen contains programs that the app recommends to you. You can also filter per channel, such as TLC, Discovery or Animal Planet. You can also look at individual programs or categories and quickly see what has been added most recently.
However, the app lacks skills that are standard nowadays. Such as the ability to download series to watch offline. Also, there is no way for parents to block adult content from children. It is also strange that the application does not keep track of what you have already watched. So there are still a lot of improvements possible. In any case, there is regular Chromecast support. The app can be downloaded via the link below.
