Diagnosis of coronavirus infection is not straightforward, as symptoms may vary from individual to individual. An Israeli startup called Vocalis Health, founded in 2019, therefore tried to develop a generally good pre-screening system that would use the change in sounds formed during speech to make a diagnosis. The work, collecting sound samples, yet they started in March last year.
Vocalis software product, VocalisCheck, can be accessed via smartphones or other devices. The artificial intelligence behind the application is not Covid-specific anyway: it can identify the voice characteristics of patients with various diseases without the patient having to go to the hospital. Vocalis has collected a wealth of data on people’s voices over the past year. Their algorithm extracts 512 features from a sound sample and creates an image from it, called a spectrogram. This allows you to diagnose possible diseases by comparing the recorded sound sample with the “sick” sound sample. The latter was recorded in clinical trials.
To test for Covid, you must first download a mobile application (VocalisCheck). When you open this, you need to answer some questions about the possible symptoms of the infection and then count to 50-70. The algorithm then compares the “image” of the speech with the saved covid recordings, compares them with the indicated symptoms, and communicates the result within a minute, which of course can only be considered as a pre-filter.
In February, Vocalis launched a joint project with an Indian company that tested 2,000 participants. Their subjects spoke several languages, including English, Hindi, Marathi, and Gujarati. To assess the effectiveness of the algorithms, the VocalisCheck tool was installed on smartphones. At the end of the project, the researchers found that the algorithm detected COVID-19 infection with 81.2 percent accuracy, even though many of those studied were asymptomatic patients. Vocalis devices are currently installed in the public and private sectors in the United States, Chile, Indonesia, South Africa, Romania and Luxembourg.
In the following, the company wants to get additional voice samples into their cloud-based database to make the detection of the infection even more accurate. It is planned to commercialize the solution and make it available to several regions.
The Vocalis Health method, in addition to Covid-19 screening, currently focuses on diseases such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, congestive heart failure, and pulmonary hypertension.
