You don’t need air conditioning if you use this super white paint – technocrat

Last November has already been reported by HVG about a super-white paint developed by researchers at Purdue University in Indiana that can almost completely reflect sunlight on it, making the surface beneath it cooler. This can be extremely useful as a lot of energy goes to cooling these days, both among the population and in different sectoral sectors.

It was proven in dozens of super-white paint experiments last year, however, the researchers were still not completely satisfied, so they continued to deal with the paint. Their work was recently crowned with success, last year the result was an even whiter paint. This provides an even stronger cooling effect on the surfaces. The 2020 white paint reflected 95.5 percent of the sunlight, while the newer version already measured 98.1 percent. This became a kind of counterpoint to the blackest black, the Vantablack, which absorbs up to 99.9 percent of visible light.

If a new generation of super-white paint is applied to a roof surface of about a thousand square meters, it can save about 10 kW of cooling capacity, says the university’s professor of mechanical engineering. The excellent cooling performance can be explained, among other things, by the use of barium sulphate as a pigment, which, unlike the traditional and not incidentally more expensive titanium dioxide pigment, does not absorb UV light. The researchers also applied another trick: they used pigment particles of different sizes that bounce off parts of sunlight at different wavelengths.

The university and the research team have already filed their patents for the new paint, which is expected to hit the market in a year or two.
