Xilinx launches ‘Vivado ML’, an FPGA EDA tool that optimizes machine learning-based design process efficiency

EDA designers today are challenged by ever-increasing design complexity. Machine learning is attracting attention from companies as it can accelerate the efficiency of complex design processes and provide benefits in the quality of results.

Xilinx, a global company of adaptive and intelligent computing, has introduced Vivado ML, an FPGA EDA tool that can significantly reduce design time and costs based on machine learning optimization algorithms and advanced team-based design flows.

Compared to the existing Vivado HLx edition, Vivado ML can improve compile times up to 5x faster and the resulting quality on average by 10% on complex designs.

Vivado ML supports machine learning-based algorithms that accelerate design finalization. It supports predictive latency and intelligent design execution, including machine learning-based logic optimization, and can automate strategies to reduce timing deadline iterations.

Xilinx introduces the concept of Abstract Shell, which allows users to define multiple modules within the system to be compiled incrementally and in parallel. Compared to the existing overall system compilation time, it can be reduced by an average of 5 times and up to 17 times. Abstract Shell helps protect customer IP by hiding important design details outside the module for system integrators providing added value and applications such as FPGA-as-a-Service (FPGA) as a service.

In addition, Vivado ML enhances collaborative design with the Vivado IP Integrator, which enables modular design using the new ‘Block Design Container’ feature. This capability facilitates team-based design methodologies, and divide-and-conquer strategies allow large-scale designs to be processed collaboratively across multiple development sites.

Adaptive features such as Dynamic Function eXchange (DFX) can be used to dynamically load custom hardware accelerators, such as runtime over-the-air (OTA), to make better use of silicon resources. DFX can load design modules in milliseconds, enabling new application implementations to perform genomic analysis by swapping with other vision algorithms during frame processing in automotive applications or in real time when sequencing DNA.

The Vivado ML Edition is currently available for free in the Standard Edition, while the Enterprise Edition starts at $2995 MSPR (recommended price).
