Today, global technology leader Xiaomi unveiled its latest breakthrough in device cooling – Loop LiquidCool Technology. Inspired by refrigeration solutions used in the aerospace industry, Loop LiQuidCool technology uses a capillary effect that draws liquid refrigerant to a heat source, evaporates, and then efficiently dissipates heat toward the colder part, until the agent condenses and is trapped through a closed-loop duct.
Compared to conventional steam chamber solutions, this new technology has twice the cooling capabilities and ranks as the most efficient solution for cooling smartphones. Xiaomi aims to introduce Loop LiquidCool technology into its products in the second half of 2022.
Loop LiquidCool Technology
This new technology includes an annular heat pipe system consisting of an evaporator, a condenser, a charging chamber, as well as gas and liquid pipes. Mounted on heat sources, the evaporator has a refrigerant that evaporates into the gas when the smartphone is under heavy load. The flow of gas and air is then transferred to a condenser, where the gas condenses again into a liquid. These liquids are absorbed and collected through tiny fibers in the refill chamber – which refills the evaporator – making it a self-sustaining system.
Although this new technology uses the same method as WC liquid cooling, the new shape factor makes a significant difference in efficiency. As conventional WC systems do not have separate channels for gases and liquids, hot gas and cold liquids mix and interfere with each other, especially under heavy load. The ring-shaped pump has a special gas pipe design, which greatly reduces the resistance of the air passage by 30%. By enabling a smoother steam flow, the maximum heat transfer capacity is increased to 100%.
One-way circulation is key to heat dissipation
To ensure one-way high-efficiency circulation, the implementation of Tesla’s valve structure inside the filling chamber is crucial. The Tesla valve is a one-way valve that allows liquids to pass through the evaporator, while blocking the movement of gases in the wrong direction. This allows for greater efficiency in gas / liquid circulation throughout the system.
On the test Xiaomi Mix 4 device, the original steam chamber was replaced with a new Loop LiquidCool Technology solution. During the 30-minute Genshin Impact test with a maximum video setting of 60 frames per second, this impressive cooling system kept the device below the maximum temperature of 47.7 ℃, and the processor is 8.6 ℃ cooler than the standard version.
Thanks to the one-way circulation, gas-liquid separation and gas pipes with low thermal resistance of Tesla’s valve, the flexible form factor also enables the adoption and integration of Loop LiquidCool technology into any type of interior design. For example, a square loop will allow more space for the battery, camera module and more.
