Woman killed in wild elephant attack in Kaptai

An unidentified mentally handicapped woman has died in a wild elephant attack in Kaptai. The incident took place late Wednesday night (April 20) on Kaptai Naval Road.

The age of the woman is estimated to be around 40 years. Upon receiving the news, people from the forest department, army, navy, police and fire brigade rushed to the spot.

At that time, various parts of the woman’s body were found lying in different places on the road. Police recovered the body and brought it to the police station.

According to local sources, the mentally handicapped woman was walking alone on the Kaptai Navy Road on Wednesday night. At that time there were 15 to 20 wild elephants on the road. Suddenly the mentally handicapped woman fell in front of the wild elephant. At that moment, an elephant grabbed the woman by the scruff of the neck and threw her head and limbs apart.

Kaptai Range Officer Khandaker Mahamudul Haque Murad said it rained all day on Wednesday. Due to the rain, wild elephants came up on the road. The accident happened when a mentally handicapped woman suddenly fell in front of a wild elephant while walking.

According to local sources, the Kaptai Navy had earlier killed three more mentally handicapped wild elephants on the road. In the last six years, 17 people have been killed in wild elephant attacks in Kaptai.
