WithSecure has chosen as CMI – Martti Ahtisaari Peace Foundation’s strategic cybersecurity partner

WithSecureformerly F-Secure Business, will partner with CMI to promote the use of digital technologies as a tool for conflict resolution.

Digital technologies are becoming increasingly important for creating and maintaining peace. For example. Conflict mediators can use them before a negotiation to get a better overview of underlying conflicts, or gather conflict parties in an inclusive and secure medium where they can meet on equal terms.

Thus, digital tools can contribute to processes leading to lasting peace. Conversely, however, conflicting parties can also use many of the same technologies to attack each other, spread hateful messages and misinformation, and engage in other activities that undermine people’s security.

With the new collaboration, WithSecure and CMI’s goal is to raise awareness of the important role that technology can play in peace negotiations.

“As a European pioneer in the fight to secure digital environments, we know better than anyone how enemies can use digital technologies to harm each other. Conversely, we also know that technologies provide us with valuable opportunities to meet, collaborate, and communicate so that we can resolve disagreements and promote understanding of each other. CMI’s work in this area has never been more important than now, and I am pleased that WithSecure can support this work, ”says Juhani Hintikka, CEO of WithSecure.

For over 20 years, CMI has worked to prevent and resolve global conflicts through conflict mediation and dialogue. Despite the fact that CMI has been using different technologies since 2004, it was not until 2020 that they made it a priority and launched their digital project for peace creation.

The two organizations have selected three priorities that form the backbone of the collaboration:

  • Support conflict mediators with training and the right resources to better protect fieldwork against cyber attacks
  • Extension of the conflict mediators’ duty to protect their staff from physical harm to include the protection of personal data of vulnerable parties
  • Support for conflict mediators with expertise on the role of cyber threats in conflicts and how to deal with these threats

According to CMI’s CEO Janne Taalas, the collaboration with companies such as WithSecure is crucial for CMI’s future work.

“CMI has decades of experience in preventing and resolving conflicts around the world. The growing importance of the cyber area is undeniable. That is why we need partners like WithSecure to ensure that we, as a peace-building organization, are able to respond to the challenges posed by the use of digital technologies. But just as much also to take advantage of the opportunities that these technologies provide in terms of peace-building. The peace creation of the future depends on the correct handling of digital technologies, ”he says.
