Latvia could seek international assistance and build a large field hospital to provide care for the daily growing number of covid patients, says Health Minister Daniel Pavluts.
Most of all, doctors are worried about the situation that is expected in two weeks: then those people who are already infected will get to hospitals, a tenth of whom will have to be hospitalized, which will entail a total overload of the healthcare system.
The Ministry of Health does not rule out that Latvia will need to ask for international assistance. It is clear that the neighboring states will not be able to help us – the situation there is now very bad. Perhaps Sweden or Germany could provide assistance to Latvia, although so far the government has not addressed these countries with this request.
It is proposed to create a large field hospital, which will send already treated patients with Covid-19, who still need medical supervision. This hospital would have fewer medical staff, since there would be no “serious” patients in critical condition.
Today, on October 7, at a meeting of the Crisis Management Council, a decision will be made to introduce new covid restrictions. The government will have to choose between two courses of action: the first involves restrictions for all residents, and second – preservation of certain privileges for the vaccinated… It is necessary to find a way to establish fewer restrictions on the vaccinated, the minister said.
In his opinion, it is extremely important to monitor compliance with the expected restrictions. The country’s Interior Ministry promises to carry out control measures, but basically compliance with the restrictions will depend on the society itself. Only now the introduction of the regulation to control Covid-19 was delayed, as politicians were afraid of the mood of a certain part of society.
Perhaps, on Friday, October 8, Latvia will announce an emergency in the healthcare system, and from Monday, October 11, hospitals will stop providing planned services.
