With a new promotion, TikTok proves that it is not harmful to mental health

The social platform has teamed up with experts to mitigate its own harmful effects.

In recent months, the discourse regarding the national security risk posed by TikTok has flared up again, as a result of which several Western states, from the United States to France to neighboring Austria, have banned the installation of the Chinese application on their government devices.

However, this is not the only problem for the operator ByteDance, as the platform is also the target of regular criticism due to the fact that, according to experts, it has a harmful effect on the mental health of underage users along with other social networking sites, such as Instagram. TikTok is now trying to improve its reputation during the mental health awareness month, which takes place between May 1 and May 31.

In the spirit of this, under the hashtag #MentalHealthAwareness a new central interface has been launched, which is intended to help preserve mental health. For the rest of the month, this will be filled with educational materials involving experts to help users gain a comprehensive understanding of the topic.

In addition, TikTok provides advertising opportunities worth $2 million to a number of NGOs, including the Alliance for Eating Disorders, the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, and the Crisis Text Line. Finally, the platform also teamed up with 10 content creators, who draw attention to the importance of mental health with their own educational posts.

The question is, of course, how much this will be enough to solve TikTok’s PR problems, because the social media site has a bad reputation not only because of the “trends” that explode again and again, involving deaths, when we talk about mental health. According to experts, such services can greatly contribute to the development of, for example, eating disorders, depression, attention deficit disorder or sleep problems. Some American schools for that also sued the operators of the largest social platformsand the professional organization called The American Psychological Association recently one drew the attention of parents in a study the importance of paying attention.
