Winter dry skin – when to see a doctor?

During the winter, even skin that otherwise requires normal care can be more sensitive and drier. The problem is particularly acute in the face and palms. Dr. Ildikó Vincze, a dermatologist-cosmetologist at Dermatica told us what we could do about it.

Causes of dry skin

In the winter, the situation can be exacerbated not only by the pungent, cold air, but also by the dry indoor air with lower humidity during the heating season. In addition, of course, individual characteristics also play a role: dry, sensitive skin requires even more attention. The structure of the skin changes with age. Skin conditions that become oily as a result of hormonal changes in adolescence normalize over time and then as the age progresses, dryness of the skin becomes an increasing problem.

With hydration for prevention

  • Instead of long baths, take a shower that is pleasantly warm, in not too hot water so we can preserve the lipid layer of the skin
  • During prevention, the most important thing is to constantly take care of replenishing the lost moisture of the skin. After bathing, use body lotion, hand cream and lip care several times during the day.
  • A the ideal humidity of the apartment air is between 40 and 60 percent. A humidifier can help if the problem is exacerbated by dry indoor air.

Preparations for dry skin

The palette is wide, you can choose from several product families. There is no general rule by which we can say that a particular shower gel or body lotion is suitable for everyone – the doctor explains.

“The proposed formulations have a low content of volatiles and fragrances, preferably free of preservatives. They contain essential fatty acids needed to replace the lipid layer of the skin (eg linoleic acid, ceramides), anti-inflammatory vitamins (eg vitamin E) and possibly thermal water. ”

It is recommended to consult a dermatologist for people with particularly sensitive skin, in connection with a care cream suitable for their skin type. In this way, we can avoid getting to the most optimal preparation for us without unnecessary financial effort and possibly unpleasant side effects.

When do we ask for specialist help?

Dry skin in a certain form and to some extent is a natural phenomenon during the winter. However, there are cases where the symptoms need to be taken seriously and it is worth seeking professional help for treatment instead of home remedies. Such a case, if the dryness of the skin occurs in patches all over the body, possibly accompanied by itching, or the dryness and itching of the skin is so great that it is already disturbing during daily activities.
