Wine production will grow 1% in Portugal – Wine

Wine production in Portugal is expected to increase by around 1% in 2021, compared to the previous year, to a total volume close to 6.472 million hectoliters.

According to the accounts made by the Institute of Vine and Wine (IVV), if this forecast is confirmed in the next harvest, it corresponds to a rise of 2% compared to the average of the last five campaigns.

The Douro and Porto (+20%) and Alentejo (+5%) regions are those that, in volume, show the highest year-on-year increases. These increases correspond to increases in excess of 250 thousand and 50 thousand hectoliters, respectively.

On the other hand, the regions of the Azores (-25%), Lisbon (-15%) and Minho (-15%) were the most affected compared to 2020. Tejo (-5%) and Madeira (-3%) also appear with forecasts of production breakdown in the document released by the institute this Friday, July 30th.

“The data collected indicate that, in most regions, the vineyards present, in general, a good vegetative development and a good sanitary condition, despite some meteorological instability, with the expectation that this harvest will produce good quality wines”, emphasizes the IVV. Brazil led the increase in Portuguese wine purchases in 2020. Exports increased 3.2% in value and 5.3% in volume over the past year, reaching a new high of 846 million euros. It’s the French who drink the most, but the Canadians who pay the best.
