What does the announcement of an energy crisis in the supply of petroleum products mean for Latvia and what should residents prepare for, explained Janis Lachplesis, a deputy of the Daugavpils City Council, in the Dialogue with the City program.

According to the city duma deputy and chairman of the Latgale FEZ Supervisory Council, residents of Daugavpils already have rich experience in declaring emergencies.

The announcement of this energy crisis gives additional tools and powers to the Cabinet of Ministers, if necessary, allows it to intervene in the situation and even in market relations, when solving important issues, Janis Lachplesis believes.

In his opinion, it is extremely wrong to say that the market decides everything, since the state must still regulate it:

«ATAfter all, the main thing for market participants is, first of all, to earn more, which does not always coincide with the decisions that need to be made in a crisis situation and in connection with the needs that arise in society. If, indeed, there are difficulties with a certain type of fuel, then I admit that there may come a period when the amount of fuel we receive per month may be limited. We’ve been through moments like this before, but I hope it doesn’t happen.“- confident MP.

Moreover, the Cabinet of Ministers has shown that it sees the problem: it has taken up this issue, is ready to solve it and takes responsibility.

«I hope that with the supply of fuel we will be in the same situation as everyone else in the EU, since it is very difficult for such small countries like Latvia to solve international problems alone. The only question will be the price and how competitive it will be for entrepreneurs at the European level and for residents regarding their solvency“, – explained Lachplesis.
