why systems for fixing traffic violations are wrong

Karina is one of the first to receive in our country fine with new fixing camera violations for talking on a mobile phone. She got into the lens of the complex right next to a house in the north of Moscow.

“There is always a traffic jam at a traffic light. I remember this moment very well – I was talking, I did not interfere with anyone. The green light came on and I stopped the conversation,” said the motorist.

The fine – one and a half thousand rubles – Karina did not dispute: you cannot find fault with the picture, as they say – you can clearly see the phone and what the driver is talking about. Such “smart” cameras began to appear on our roads about three months ago.

During this short time, with the help of new fixation complexes, more than 300 fines were issued for using the phone while driving. More than eight thousand “letters of happiness” got drivers for an unfastened seat belt. However, as practice shows, artificial intelligence that recognizes violations often fails.

A motorist from Moscow Sergey tried to challenge the fine and prove that he was wearing a seatbelt at the wheel.

“The jacket has a very high collar, you see, it is closed, and the camera’s view for shooting is not that great. Moreover, the weather was sunny and the sun visor was lowered,” the driver shows.

The traffic police agreed with Sergey’s arguments and canceled the fine, agreeing that the artificial intelligence had made a mistake. Even its developers agree that the system is far from perfect: the belt is sometimes impossible to see, and the situation is even worse with a mobile phone.

You can get a “letter of happiness” even in the most innocuous situation. Here the phone is fixed on the dashboard – this is not prohibited by the rules. However, as soon as I reach for the emergency stop sign, which is nearby, and that’s it – for the camera installed on the pole at an angle, I become an intruder. All these errors, inaccuracies and controversial situations pose a natural question for us: why is video recording “trained” to identify precisely these violations, while really dangerous maneuvers, recklessness, and driving into the oncoming lane of the camera are still extremely ineffective to recognize?

Experts are sure that video recording in our country needs to be developed in a different direction.

“If the cameras become so smart, then it is better to reconfigure them to record the most dangerous traffic violations: violation of the rules of lane change, speeding, violation of the marking,” says lawyer Sergei Radko.

That is what we call dangerous driving. This term was introduced back in 2016, as reckless drivers constantly become the culprit of fatal accidents. However, until now this violation has not been administered in any way. It’s time to set up the cameras for him.
