Why do fire trucks and ambulances use sirens at night?

As part of the project “Ask Daugavpils Self-Government a Question”, reader Evelina asked about the reasons for turning on the sirens at night on the vehicles of the first responders.

«Can fire trucks and ambulances turn on their sirens at night when leaving for a call? Is there a time limit? Why use a siren at night if the roads are empty at that time».

The answer was prepared in the self-government of Daugavpils: “Light and sound signals are turned on only so that pedestrians and drivers can notice the approach of emergency vehicles in a timely manner, and so that doctors, police officers, rescue or emergency gas services can provide assistance to those in trouble as soon as possible. The rules of the road require that the transport of operational services, in specific cases, turn on both sound and light signals. Rules for the use of light and sound signals are the same day and night».

We remind you that anyone can ask their questions to the city administration and municipal employees, specialists of city services and enterprises – this can be done right here.
