More than 1,000 attacks on the Ukrainian healthcare system were recorded during the Russian invasion, the World Health Organization (WHO) announced today.
This is the largest number ever recorded in such a humanitarian critical situation.
– In the 1,004 attacks recorded by the WHO during the last 15 months of the war, 101 people (healthcare workers and patients) were killed and the same number were wounded – stated the European branch of the WHO.
Health facilities, warehouses, means of transport, including ambulances, were attacked.
– Attacks on health services are a violation of international humanitarian law. They deprive people of the care they need and have widespread and long-term consequences – said the representative of the WHO in Ukraine, Jarno Habič.
The WHO last week at its assembly in Geneva demanded that Russia immediately stop its attacks on the health system in Ukraine.
In some regions, mainly in eastern Ukraine, health services are working partially due to the damage.
The conflict also affects health care costs, which have increased in the last six months.
According to the WHO, almost a third of the population has difficulty paying for certain health services.
