Whether or not an audience is an afterthought for football players at the Games

With or without an audience at the Olympic Games, that doesn’t really matter to Dutch football players. “Of course it takes a bit of shine off the event,” says national coach Sarina Wiegman. “But we’re here to be successful and perform at our peak. That’s the goal.”

The organizing committee of the Games announced on Thursday that all sports matches in and around Tokyo will be held in front of empty stands. The residents of Japan are also not welcome at the sports locations, everything to prevent the spread of the corona virus. Audiences will probably be allowed in stadiums outside the Tokyo area, albeit to a limited extent. The soccer players will play their first two group matches against Zambia (July 21) and Brazil (July 24) at the Miyagi Stadium in Rifu, a city nearly 400 kilometers from Tokyo.

“It is not clear to us whether the public is allowed to attend. That question is not addressed by the organization,” said Wiegman. “We know that the measures in Tokyo are different than elsewhere in the country. At the European Championship 2017 in our own country and the World Cup 2019 in France, we experienced how beautiful it is to play in front of such an audience. Covid-19 here without our own supporters, but above all we are here to perform.”

The last group match against China (July 27) is in Yokohama, which is part of Greater Tokyo. Orange will then play in an empty stadium anyway.
