“When are you going to return to Belgrade”: Longing for a time that no longer exists – Scene

The musical duo Gabriel, consisting of Dea Džanković and Aleksa Stanković, has released a music video for their third single “Kad česch da se vratš u Beograd” and they are announcing their first concert on December 8 at the Rex Cultural Center.

Paying tribute to the cult documentary “Grey Gardens” by Dea with his stunning and longing voice, but also with the direction he signs in addition to the text, he takes you on a journey through the spirit of Belgrade that is disappearing.

Hadži Aleksandar Đurović was in charge of the entire analog recording and post-production process, and the video itself was shot in one day in abandoned villas on Neimar and Senjak. One of the two mansions may have been immortalized in artistic expression for the last time – this video, as the place is now sealed. The aesthetics of the video is a combination of melancholy, hope, longing and fear in the lyrics as well as in the melody, and it represents the perfect ambience for the late autumn days.

– The feeling that was conveyed in the song is mixed, at that moment it was intimate. I wrote it in class, in the summer of 2020, when we came out of quarantine, on the first day of the protest. I had an anxiety attack while I was watching “stories” on the way home, as if I didn’t know what was happening outside, and that song just came out of me – artist Dea Džanković tells Danas.

She reveals that the original inspiration for the video was the Depeche Mode song/video “Never Let Me Down Again”, and the plan was to film it on Great War Island. During that period, Aleksandar was busy with the film “The Cross in the Desert” and premieres. When the moment came to shoot the video, the embankment of the Great War Island fell so much that no ship could reach it. Which, it turns out, is a good thing, because the video turned out better than the original idea.

– The villa on Neimar (where the video was mainly shot) is one of my favorite places in this city. I often went there to take photos – says the artist.

It is an abandoned Gerontology Center and the former mansion of the Minister of Finance, which is quite reminiscent and alludes to “Grey Gardens”.

– In the last two years, there has been a longing for a time that no longer exists in Belgrade, that’s why I gravitated towards abandoned locations, in order to capture the spirit of Belgrade that is being erased. Everything was done analog, in the style of the eighties and in a minimalist manner. Our generations use digital technologies and things that are quite abstract, which burden their attention. In this way, hyperproduction of information and hyperrealization of everything contribute to the time – notes Dea.

As a director and producer, she is familiar with the prices of video recording, which, she says, amount to thousands and thousands of euros.

– I knew that I could not, nor did I want to, compete with the flood of “content” coming out here, which, although it has top-notch aesthetics, has no poetics. Our videos look superbly produced, but they have developed a visual language in which everything looks great, but everything resembles each other – the same colors, symbols… I didn’t want to go that route, but pure minimalism and aimed for poetics – concludes the artist.

In addition to the festival at the Rex Cultural Center, where they are performing, she also announces a new song, which will be released at the end of the month, “I am watching old movies”. Gabriel has so far published three songs, “I can’t get you off my mind” and “Dream of you”, along with the aforementioned “When are you going back to Belgrade”.
