Rest assured, the year 2021 will be rich in adventure with the return on M6 of … “Beijing Express”. The adventure show airs from Tuesday February 23.
And for this 14th season, Stéphane Rotenberg and his team are offering you a trip to Africa: departure planned for Uganda. For several weeks, eight pairs will live unforgettable experiences, between emotions, laughter, sharing and obviously stress and competition. We deliver the first indiscretions to you.
An unprecedented departure
For this season, entitled “On the tracks of the Red Earth”, “Beijing Express” is full of new features, both for viewers and candidates.
If you were used to a starting line facing Stéphane Rotenberg, the red backpack screwed on the back, forget immediately: the candidates will set off on the Ugandan dirt tracks as soon as they descend from the plane … with their suitcase on wheels!
What give rise to funny scenes from the first minutes of the show. See yourself pulling a 20kg suitcase through a nature reserve looking for a rhino? Well the candidates did. And I promise, the moment is worth the detour. Fortunately, the candidates will find the mythical red backpack of “Beijing Express” at the end of the first day.
This year, another novelty: the “bonus car”. If a pair pulls the card with the green logo of the “bonus car”, they escape the stop sign for a few hours.
“We knew that Uganda is a low-motorized country, that it was going to be a challenge for the candidates to find vehicles on certain desert tracks. That’s why we set up this bonus”, explains the presenter. Stéphane Rotenberg.
A bonus that will be found in other countries. Enough to bring a breath of fresh air to the pairs. For the rest, the rules do not change. This season you will once again find the dreaded red flag and the immunity tests.
A final in Dubai?
Uganda, Ethiopia and a final in Dubai … It was the program for the season. Before the coronavirus came to disrupt production plans (and the whole world for that matter).
Filming, which started on March 5, was stopped after a few days. Three episodes have been shot and it’s back to France. “In terms of production, it was dreamlike to reprogram everything. We did not expect it at all. In addition to the confinement, everything had to be reviewed,” explains Stéphane Rotenberg.
After four months of Dantesque organization, a new itinerary was decided. Resumption of filming in September. And surprise for the candidates, direction Greece then Turkey. Masks and social distancing will be required throughout this second part of the competition.
But producer Thierry Guillaume warns all the same: “Sometimes human emotions will take over, and there will be hugs. But all the candidates tested negative before, during and after the shooting.”
Besides the casting, let’s talk about it. This year again, the eight pairs are colorful. From the first episode, the characters will assert themselves. Good slices of laughter and emotions are on the program.
“It’s a very feel good, their happiness is visible “, tells us Stéphane Rotenberg, a smile on his lips at the evocation of his memories.
Who are the eight pairs (find our slide show)? Rose-Marie and Cinzia, the Parisian friends; Florent and Noël, the Catalan colleagues; Kaoutar and Nour, the mother and the daughter; Aurore and Jonathan, the Northerners couple; Pierre-Louis and Arnaud, the party-loving brothers; Christophe and Claire, the father and the daughter; Sabine and Loïc, the pair of strangers and Crisoula and Jenny, the Belgian aunt and niece.
40,000 applications are received each year by the production
Despite the coronavirus, Stéphane Rotenberg wishes to reassure viewers: “It will be the same values, the same” Beijing Express “, the same enthusiasm, a season of all records”.
And with magnificent landscapes: the impenetrable forest of Bwindi, a Ugandan national park known to shelter 300 mountain gorillas, or even the cave houses of Göreme in Turkey. “We hope that it will make the French travel, especially at the moment”, concludes the presenter of the program.
“Beijing Express, On the tracks of the Red Earth”, broadcast from Tuesday February 23 on M6 at 9:05 pm.
“Route Bis” with Fabrice and Briac
This season again, “Beijing Express Route Bis” will offer to extend the adventure in the second part of the evening. And it is the pair of strangers Fabrice and Briac who will follow a route parallel to the candidates. On the program, a discovery of the history of the countries crossed, of culture and traditions. All without the stress of competition.
Fabrice and Briac did not win season 12 of “Beijing Express: the route of 50 volcanoes” but marked the history of the show. The duo of strangers, who were opposed to everything starting with their age (51 years old for Fabrice and 21 years old for Briac at the time of the show), have become inseparable over the course of the adventure. Going back on the roads together was obvious.
For “Itinerary Bis 2020”, it was the two sisters Lætitia and Aurélie, winners of season 12 of “Beijing Express” who took back their red backpacks.
