The border police officers from ITPF Sighetu Marmației discovered and confiscated over 17,000 packs of cigarettes of non-EU origin, worth approximately 204,000 lei, goods that were to arrive on the black market in the area. A car used in criminal activity has been seized and its driver is being investigated for smuggling.
On January 9 this year, at the level of the Territorial Service of the Border Police Suceava – ITPF Sighetu Marmației, an action was carried out on the fight against cigarette smuggling in the area of responsibility.
Thus, around 07.00, starting from the border area, the police pursued and detained, within the locality of Gura Humorului, a Mercedes Sprinter van, which was suspected of transporting goods from smuggling activities. The car was driven by a 50-year-old Romanian citizen from Suceava County.

Following the thorough control over the means of transport, in the cargo compartment was discovered a specially arranged place – double wall – in which were hidden packs of cigarettes of different brands. After their inventory, a total quantity of 17,450 packages of non-EU origin resulted. Their value amounts to almost 204,000 lei.
The means of transport, worth 40,000 lei, was detained for further checks.
In this case, investigations are carried out, under the coordination of the Prosecutor’s Office attached to the Gura Humorului Court, for committing the crime of smuggling, and the necessary legal measures will be taken upon completion. The driver was detained for 24 hours, and will be presented before the court today with a proposal for pre-trial detention for 30 days.
