One of the biggest problems is overload

The largest bone on our feet is the heel bone, which has a big task: it has to maintain the weight of the body, which has a serious impact on every step. It is no wonder, therefore, that this area is quite fragile and can become painful relatively often.

In most cases, heel pain is caused by mechanical causes, but can include arthritis, infections, autoimmune and neurological problems, trauma, osteoporosis and other bone diseases, as well as diseases of several organ systems.

– One of the typical causes of heel pain is a disease of the thick connective tissue band that crosses the soles of the feet, plantar fasciitis, or inflammation of the plantar fascia. This tape is easy to overload, causing it to thicken up to twice – as evidenced by ultrasound and MRI. The symptoms that may indicate this are typical: the pain usually appears in the morning, which later eases significantly, but increases with a longer position or climbing, Dr. Dobos emphasizes.

– Among the mechanical reasons, the problems caused by non-ergonomic shoes and walking in barefoot socks at home are worth highlighting. Slippers with too flat and untreated soles, flip-flops, put a significant strain on the heel and even the entire spine. During prolonged wear, the heel is subject to regular bumps, which sooner or later causes a problem.

If the pain does not go away, a medical examination is important

Although it often happens that the heel pain goes away when someone starts wearing well-designed shoes or if they rest or ice the area, there are still symptoms for which it is better to seek medical help.

“Diagnosis is important just to rule out certain more serious illnesses,” he said. – That is, if the heel pain occurs not only when standing, walking, but also at rest, or if it does not go away in a week or two, it is advisable to see a doctor. Examination should not be delayed if the patient is unable to stand on the tip of the toe, if he or she cannot restrain his or her foot, or if there is swelling around the heel or foot, or signs of inflammation such as pain, redness, fever. The cause of numbness in the soles, loss of sensation, and tingling-like sensation should also be investigated, although the latter symptoms may require more neurological examination.

What can help with the corner pain?

If plantar fasciitis causes heel pain, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory therapy and / or shock wave therapy may be considered for 1-2 weeks. Also the first therapy may be the use of personalized insoles, heel lifts, which can relieve the tension of the plantar fascia, the plantar fascia, and thus the pain. (It is advisable to wear silicone heels for 3-5 weeks first, followed by the goose foot pad.)

In prolonged cases with no improvement – if there is no contraindication – repeated topical steroid injection may reduce symptoms for a longer period of time. – At the same time, as a general rule, the optimal choice of shoes must be sought, and soles that are too high and too flat should be avoided. If we play sports, with the right warm-up, we can significantly reduce the strength of the load on the heel. In case of overweight, it is worth trying to reduce it, as this will reduce the load on the legs and musculoskeletal system in general.
