Does your throat hurt? Thanks to the wide selection in the pharmacy, everyone can find the “throat” remedy. Ask your pharmacist.
What is a sore throat?
Pain, redness, swelling, burning sensation and occasional hoarseness, difficulty swallowing. Sore throat complaints are familiar and can often occur in children and adults from fall to spring. In some cases, swelling of the lymph nodes, muscle aches, runny nose add to the trouble.
What can cause a sore throat?
A sore throat most often indicates the lurking of an infection in the body. Sore throat is most often caused by viruses, but can also be triggered by a bacterial or fungal infection. It can also be caused by irritating environmental factors (dust, cigarette smoke, dry air) or reflux disease.
What can someone who is struggling with a seemingly harmless sore throat do?
It should be noted that the use of oral antibiotics in the first round should be avoided! On the one hand, because the complaint is not likely to be caused by bacteria, and on the other hand, unwarranted antibiotic use may be associated with side effects and the spread of resistance. It is much more worth choosing from the over-the-counter drugs in the pharmacy.
Antiseptics, anti-inflammatory drugs and more
Drugs that reduce pain, inflammation, and kill pathogens or reduce the risk of further infection in the event of a viral or bacterial infection can be used effectively. Over-the-counter medicines for the topical treatment of sore throats usually contain antiseptic ingredients, such as acriflavine, amylmethacresol, benzoxonium chloride, cetylpyridinium chloride, dichlorobenzyl alcohol or chlorhexidine. The dosage forms in which these antiseptics are present are varied: lozenges and rinsing solutions are also available. It is common for the active ingredients to be combined with each other for a more pronounced effect. In this way, the number of pathogens can be reduced at low drug concentrations.
In order to significantly reduce the sore throat, some formulations also contain a local anesthetic. Other formulations offer vitamin C as a “plus”, thinking that the body also needs an adequate supply of vitamin C to fight sore throats. It happens that some formulations contain honey to coat the mucous membranes of the cough-irritated throat, while others contain mentholated, eucalyptus extract to relieve nasal congestion complaints.
In addition to the aforementioned “throat disinfectant” agents, mention should be made of anti-inflammatory agents, including flurbiprofen and benzidamine, which are available in the form of lozenges or solution sprays. These the active substances do not directly kill the pathogens, but they reduce inflammation of the pharynx caused by infection or irritation, that is, they relieve pain, redness, and swelling.
Use the pharmacy wisely!
It should be known that lozenges or sprays applied to the oral mucosa have a short-acting effect and offer an effective solution to sore throat complaints. Numerically, they can take effect in as little as a few minutes, after which they can last for 2-4 hours. It should be noted that “throat disinfectant” lozenges can usually be used from the age of 4, when the child can suck on their own without the risk of ingestion. Sugar-free preparations are appearing in an increasing number of drugs for the treatment of sore throats, in addition to the needs of diabetics in terms of protecting teeth from caries.
It is good advice that medicines for the topical treatment of sore throats, such as lozenges, oral mucosal sprays, rinses, are not recommended immediately before or after meals, or before or after brushing, or with milk, as this may reduce the effect. In addition, for 1 week of sore throat that shows no signs of improvement and does not want to go away, you should see a doctor to find out the underlying cause.
