Western Digital upgrades SSD’s Green series to NVMe

Western Digital has expanded its range of SSDs with a few new models. The WD Green SN350 series consists of NVME SSDs in the m.2 format and are aimed at price-conscious buyers. The available capacities are 240, 480 and 960 GB. They get a suggested retail price of $ 44, 55 and 100 respectively.

With the largest version, the manufacturer promises sequential read and write speeds of up to 2,400 and 1,900 MB / s. These are roughly the same speeds as those of the WD Blue SN550. However, in the field of random reads and writes, the Green discs are failing. The Green SN350 960 GB achieves speeds of up to 340,000 and 380,000 iops. The WD Blue SN550 1 TB is a lot faster, with random read and write speeds of 410,000 and 405,000 iops.

The product page of the SN350 drives does not state the type of nand flash memory used. Since the 960GB version has a TBW lifespan of just 80 TB, it is likely that WD chose qlc-nand. The higher-segmented WD Blue SN550 with a capacity of 1 TB has a lifespan of 600 TBW.

Furthermore, the Green SN350 SSDs come with a three-year manufacturer’s warranty, two years less than their larger Blue brothers. WD has not announced when the new SSDs will be available for purchase. It will have to become clear what euro prices these new tranches will get. A look at the price comparison shows that the (largely) better performing Blue SN550 drives are not much more expensive than the new Green models.
