Weed seeds can germinate even after SEVEN DECADES

Autumn walks in our gardens, vegetable growers harvest the last fruits, pluck the remains of plants, if they are healthy, they take them to the composter, and if they are sick, they pack them in bags and take them to the landfill or destroy them in some other way. In these remains, weeds were also found, which, thanks to those several days of rain, grew.

Gardeners, if you forgot to remind you. Weed plants can be stored in a composter only if they have not formed seeds. Otherwise, we will only unknowingly help them to disperse. Seeds of some species retain germination even seven decades. Plants do not have to sprout in the next vegetation. He will wait a few years, so he will surprise us unpleasantly.

The same happens during vegetation, when weeds or weeds are destroyed by digging and the plant herb is deposited in a composter or left in a funnel as malč.

When weed seeds germinate depends on many factors

Therefore, weeds are undesirable plants on all agricultural plots, regardless of what is grown on them. One destroys them regularly, but – it happens that he misses, or is treatment is delayed and the plant forms a seed that yields a new plant the following year. And does every seed always germinate next spring?

It’s not mandatory, because abundance of seeds which is produced by each weed plant, only a small part germinates the following year. Most remain in the land and sprouts in two, three, and is possible even in seventy years. Since man is constantly destroying them, weed plants have taken care to somehow prolong their species.

Weed seeds can germinate for many years

It is known to be the seed of weed plants spreads in various ways (water for irrigation, wind, tillage, animals, and there is also man) and reaches various soil substrates. It’s a seed biologically resistant to loss of germination and can preserve it for many years. Thus, for example, the plant hoću-neću (rusomača) retains germination for 16-35 years, poponac 22, bokvica 16, bulka more than 12, mišjakinja 10. The recorder is four (tanner) which can germinate even after a full seven decades. It is followed by cinderella, which grows even after 40 years, fly agaric and helper – 39 and mustard, which germinates 35 years from the moment the seed reaches the ground.

How long each seed will rest in the soil depends on many factors. When the seeds reach poor soil, with unsuitable climatic conditions, will not germinate he’ll be waiting next spring more convenient moment. The forced period of dormancy also has immature seeds, and sometimes it is created by man by deep plowing and burying to a greater depth. Some weeds are “specialized” only for certain crops: wheat chaff, buckwheat for alfalfa. Due to the large production, the seeds germinate successively.

Four “produce” the most seeds

The largest number of weed seeds in our fields germinate at a depth of one to five inches. If it reaches a greater depth, it germinates later or in the following years. When it will be depends on the plant species that have been grown on that plot for several years. The conditions that man creates for plants also correspond to weeds, so it is not difficult to assume that most weed seeds that fall to the ground give a new plant. The better the conditions, the higher the percentage of deposited seed will germinate.

It is not difficult to guess how many seeds are in the soil when you know how many seeds only one weed produces. And here, four is in the first place: leave only one behind 3,560,000 seeds. It is followed by loboda with 600,000, saffron 270,000, cinderella 123,000, big fly 51,000, digitaria 49,000, assistant 40,000, watermelon 18,000, dragonfly 20,000, flycatcher and great fox with 15,000 each, wild sorghum 10,000…

Considering that each seed can preserve germination for many years, it is not difficult to conclude that there are no clean fields and that undesirable plants should be regularly destroyed before the seeds are brought so that the quantities of seeds stored in the soil would not increase further.
