After the announcement of the second ‘lockdown’, we went back to work from home en masse. During the annual MS Ignite, a global event for Microsoft partners, many new Microsoft Teams updates were announced to make working from home easier.
In the following overview we would like to explain the most relevant updates to Microsoft Teams.
An enhanced meeting experience
The spotlight function
As a meeting organizer, it’s important to know that everyone sees your screen. With the spotlight functionality you as an organizer can lock your video as the main view for all participants.
Meeting recordings made in Microsoft Teams will be automatically saved to OneDrive and SharePoint. In addition, an overview of all attendees on the right makes it easy to organize large meetings.
Custom presentation layout
When you give a presentation in PowerPoint, you no longer need to switch between two screens to show both the presentation and the presenter. Teams now gives the option to display both of these in one screen. How? After blurring the background, the presenter will be in the foreground of the presentation.
Together from a distance
We no longer need to all be in separate boxes during an online meeting. The ‘Together mode’ virtually brings all participants of a meeting together in the same room. Within this functionality there is a wide choice of fictional locations.
Leave group chat
Strangely, it was not possible to leave a group chat before. A group chat in Teams is a handy way to communicate with multiple people at the same time, but sometimes that chat is no longer relevant. Therefore, it is now possible to leave a group chat while retaining the chat history.
Rights over channels
When creating a team, a general channel automatically appears. Unfortunately, these channels were used more and more to share non-work-related matters with the result that there was no longer an overview. The solution to this is to give the administrators of a team more control. The administrators now have the following choices:
Allow anyone to post
Only allow team owners to post
Allow all team members to post, but remind them that messages are read by everyone
Change personal settings
You can now manage your personal preferences even better thanks to the new structure of the settings menu. The new structure allows you, among other things, to change the theme and language in one place. To access your personal settings, click on your profile picture and select settings.
