Our expectations for Google I/O 2022
May is a special month for Google. The gigantic tech company always organizes Google I/O. This conference is intended for developers of apps, games and other software, but also has plenty of interesting things for the general public. You can read below what we can expect. Here are the expectations for Google I/O 2022.
1. Android 13
We kick off with the big star of the show: Android 13. That Google will present the successor to Android 12 (from 2021) during I/O 2022 is not an expectation, but a fact. The first test version for the general public is already available. Google keeps a different timeline than the years before, whereby such a version was invariably released later.
2. Google Pixel 6a
There are also rumors that Google will present a new phone during I/O 2022. The Google Pixel 6a has been the subject of regular speculation in recent months and should succeed the Google Pixel 5a. This device was only officially released in Japan and the United States.
In terms of design, the Pixel 6a seems to resemble the ‘regular’ Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro. Because this device has to become more affordable, it would have to compromise on the camera area. According to rumors, the Pixel 6a will therefore have the same camera as the Pixel 5 (from 2020).
3. Pixel Watch
We’ve been hearing rumors about the Pixel Watch for years, but Google hasn’t released its own smartwatch until now.
According to telecom insider Jon Prosser that will change. Prosser claims that the Pixel Watch will be unveiled during I/O 2022. The smart gadget is said to run on Wear OS version 3.1 and have a round, traditional watch design.
4. Wear OS
Speaking of Wear OS, we expect Google to announce several new features for its watch software during I/O 2022. That’s what the company did last year.
Things get especially interesting when the Google Pixel Watch discussed above is actually announced. Google will probably immediately bring some exclusive Wear OS functions to the watch (as happens with Pixel phones).
5. New Nest Hub
We’re not sure whether it will be announced during I/O 2022, but it seems that Google is working behind the scenes on a new Nest Hub.
The smart speaker seems to have a removable screen. This way you can simultaneously use the device as a kind of tablet and, for example, walk around the house with it.
6. Google Pixel Fold
We are even less certain about the announcement of the Pixel Fold (also called Pixel Notepad).
In the corridors we hear that Google is working on a foldable smartphone, but many details are still missing. Google will probably not show much more than a short teaser during I/O 2022.
Google I/O 2022 will take place on 11 in 12 mei† Like previous editions, the event will largely take place online, although there will also be physical meetings.
The advantage of this ‘online first’ strategy is that you can easily follow everything from home. The keynote, where key announcements will be made, will be available to watch via a YouTube livestream in due course.
