We test Google’s new reading mode “Reading Mode”

During last night introduced Google a new tool for Android called Reading Mode. The app is supposed to make reading longer texts easier on the eyes, by improving contrast and readability and removing potentially distracting elements.

After installing the app from the Play Store, it needs to be enabled from the accessibility settings and given permissions. After that, a small button appears that floats on top of the rest of the interface. The button can be moved around and it can rest along any edge.

Pressing the button will launch the app regardless of where the user is, but if there are no more text on the screen, Reading Mode will say it didn’t find anything. Users can choose from different background colors for the text, including sepia, as well as change the font, text size and line spacing.

The app can also underline text to make it easier to read. The selection is moved by touching lines of text on the screen. Another finesse in Reading Mode is reading aloud, text-to-speech, which however did not work for us at all.

Reading Mode works much like “reader mode” (“the reader” in Swedish) in Safari and in Samsung’s browser, with the difference that Google’s equivalent can be activated everywhere – provided there are pieces of text on the screen. And just like “reader mode” in Safari, a side effect of Google’s app is that it can bypass paywalls.

Those who want to test will find Reader Mode here in Google Play.
