We remain an open society, we have many weapons at our disposal, so covid is finally “approaching the flu”

What is the latest in the field of the covid-19 epidemic in Slovenia? The current situation today is represented by a strong cast of decision-makers and experts.

Mario Fafangel and Danijel Bešič Loredan.

The Minister of Health is speaking at today’s press conference related to the current situation in the field of the covid-19 epidemic Danijel Bešič Loredanhead of the NIJZ coronavirus monitoring advisory group Mario FafangelState Secretary at the Ministry of Health Tadej Ostrcdeputy head of the working group for clinical treatment and treatment at the NIJZ infectious diseases consultation group Janez Tomažičprofessional director of ZD Ljubljana Tea Stegne Ignjatovič and head of the long-term care service at the Ministry of Health Tanja Petkovič.

Bešič Loredan explained in a short introduction that the plan that they set in the summer is now being successfully implemented in the fall, and that the system is functioning. He specifically pointed out “creative and effective cooperation” between the National Institute of Public Health (NIJZ), the Ministry of Health and other stakeholders. Covid is with us, the flu is coming and the intention is to accept covid and go through autumn and winter as an open society. He urged the citizens to adhere to the already known recommendations, stay at home in case of illness and accept the new reality. “We want to keep our health system the way it is so that all patients get the health services they need when they need them.” We want to spend the autumn and winter in such a way that we will be an even more open society in the spring, he emphasized.

Vaccination remains the foundation

Tomažič then explained that recently, clinicians and doctors have at their disposal quite a lot of tools or weapons with which they can fight against covid. Vaccination is still the foundation, with Tomažič particularly highlighting the new drug Paxlovid, which is an effective oral drug. According to him, it reduces the need for hospitalization by almost 90 percent and, to a greater extent, mortality. It is also very safe, but the doctors who prescribe it must be familiar with it. It is mainly prescribed to the elderly with a greater number of comorbidities, so care must be taken when prescribing. Although it is only given for five days, it may interact with other medications. It is mainly intended for people with severe immunodeficiency, who react less well to vaccination and are susceptible to infections. Also for everyone over 60, especially if they have any additional diseases or are overweight.

As Tomažič also stated, we often compare covid with flu, but if we compare covid vaccines with flu vaccines, the former is inappropriately more effective. The same applies to medicines. Covid is still a more serious and dangerous disease than the flu, he emphasized, but added that yes “if we use all the weapons at our disposal,” both vaccines and medicines, from the point of view of hospitalizations “we’re approaching the flu.”

More to come…
