We have to turn the page. Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa calls for the end of the pandemic for 2022 – Economy

After, in 2021, there was no New Year’s message from the President of the Republic, due to the imminence of presidential elections, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa spoke to the country again this January. After thanking him for his re-election, he focused on the pandemic. “We have to turn the page”, he stressed.

“They use to say ‘new year, new life’. In 2022 it really has to be ‘new year, new life’. We need less pandemic and more growth” reinforced Marcelo, who recalled the country’s 900 years of history to show resilience of the Portuguese.

The President admitted that about six months of 2021 were even worse than 2020, both in Portugal and in the rest of the world. “2021 could have been a fresh start, but it wasn’t. This year has to be.” Still Marcelo assumed that not everything was bad. The vaccination process, exports and even the arrival of tourists were some of the points that the Head of State listed as positive.

Marcelo wants a government that reflects pluralism of opinions

Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa also recalled that the Portuguese will soon have to “decide the Assembly of the Republic and the Government for the next four years.”

With early legislative elections scheduled for January 30th, the Head of State did not appeal to the vote but called for the composition of the next Executive to “give a voice to the pluralism of opinions and solutions” and that the “government can also remake he hopes and trusts lost or weakened and guarantees predictability for people and their life projects.”
