We Dutch buy a Polestar 2 much more often than is good for us

The 100,000th Polestar 2 recently left the production line. A nice number, but we had the idea that there are already 100,000 Polestars 2 driving around in the Netherlands alone. That is not correct, yet we Dutch people actually buy far too many copies of the Polestar 2.

The electric Polestar 2 has only been on the market since May 2020. Nevertheless, that important milestone of 100,000 units is already being tapped. In short, 100,000 units in two and a half years is not bad at all. But in a global market where about 67 million new cars pass through dealerships every year, it’s a drop in the ocean. The Dutch share in global sales of the Polestar 2, on the other hand, is remarkably large. We have purchased approximately 7,000 Polestars 2 since May 2020, or approximately 7 percent of the total number of Polestars 2 worldwide.

If you compare Dutch car sales from 2021 (approx. 325,000 units) to the world market, we bought only 0.5 percent of all new cars that year. A quick calculation: that means that we buy 14 times more Polestars than the average citizen of the world.

In short, the Polestar importer can have flowers delivered to all those 7000 Dutch Polestar 2 drivers. Or could a huge pie be on its way to the Ministry of Finance as a thank you for the EV-friendly tax climate of recent years?

Whether the Polestar 2 will continue to do so well in our country in the coming years remains to be seen. Competition is increasing and tax incentives are becoming less favourable. Especially for EVs in the higher price range. A Polestar 3 is on the way, but it will be even more expensive than the 2. In 2024, the Polestars 1, 2 and 3 will be joined by the Polestar 4, a mid-sized crossover. This will be followed in 2025 by a large electric sedan, the Polestar 5.
