We are testing Huawei’s own app for video calling: Meetime

Huawei in Sweden does not do much to make Meetime available and one of the first things I notice is the limitations. Meetime has been around for several years, first only in China, but it can be found in Huawei EMUI 10.1 and when the app appeared after a system update of the Swedish Huawei Mate 40 Pro, I took it as a reason to try the service in more detail. Because here are some interesting features. For example, the ability to choose from different backgrounds in 360 degrees, screen sharing and the ability to connect several different devices, not just phones.

When I activate Meetime, it is connected to the Huawei ID I am logged in with in the phone and by connecting other devices I can be reached by anyone who is looking for me, regardless of which device I am currently using. I give permission to the phone to search my contact list of over 1000 people to find other users who use Meetime. The result is disappointing because it does not find a single person. For the test, I am therefore referred to call my own, other Huawei device. But that is enough to evaluate the features.

Meetime is only available for Huawei’s own devices and an attempt to install Meetime app in a Samsung phone via Huawei Appgallery fails. In order for Meetime to get some distribution, Huawei should of course make sure that it is available as an alternative also for those who use other Androids and Iphones. And dissemination is central for you to have any use for the app.

I try to make a couple of calls, both voice calls and video calls in different contexts and both audio and video quality are good. In addition to the possibility of getting a blurred background, I can download and use a number of different 360-degree filters. So they change my background to a background that adapts to how I move. If I spin around, then the whole background spins around with me as if I were there on the mountain top, in the luxury apartment, on the sea at sunset and so on. If I sit still, the app is quite good at separating the foreground that should remain from the background to be replaced, but if I move, the image becomes slightly fluttery.

You can also share your screenshot and draw on it while showing something. In fact, it’s easy to do just that, to switch between apps and shows while the call is in progress, and it’s also easy to handle a regular call. When you need to answer, you can directly choose between answering or rejecting a video call or turning the call into a voice call instead and answering it if you prefer.

Functionally, Huawei Meetime is well located, but the lack of people to call is of course the app’s major weakness. The options include Facebook Messenger, Instagram, Zoom or Telegram, which can be installed on Huawei’s devices as well as in other mobiles.
