We are preparing to install a Linux distribution alongside MS Windows

If you have decided to try Linux on a computer where Windows is, it is advisable to think about the procedure, plan. Perform preparatory work. Don’t be afraid of dualboot, it’s not that complicated. But poor planning at the beginning often causes worries later. That’s why we’re going to look at it.

In my last article, we chose the graphical environment and discussed the appropriate Linux distribution associated with it.

Today’s is intended primarily for those who have decided to install a Linux distribution. It is also useful for anyone who plans to change the partition layout.

The first question before installing a second system next to Windows should be: Do I want to try the system and look at it? If the answer is yes, I do not expect longer use, it is advisable to consider using virtualization.

There are several types of virtualization software available. For example, the program Virtualbox. I enclose a screenshot for an example.

The only limitation of virtualization is that the demands of operating systems add up. Therefore, this option is not suitable for weaker computers. Virtualized operating systems also have poorer graphics performance – they are unsuitable for games and accelerated 3D graphics.

If you want to learn more about Linux, let’s go back to the basic idea of this article – installing Linux directly on the iron. If you are installing on a clean computer without a second system, the first two chapters are enough. You are concerned with scheduling disk partitions or creating a USB boot disk. I recommend a separate partition for user directories to be mounted in home. The division with EFi may look something like this.

Take this recommendation as a guide. Everything is from my personal experience for the most general and at the same time practical division. None of this needs to be firmly adhered to. The Linux partition may be smaller, but I recommend some reservations. The Home directory can be part of the base partition. However, a stand-alone solution makes it easier to work with data. The swap partition can be replaced with a swap file. However, a partition with at least RAM is more reliable for hibernation.

With the Linux and Windows variants on one system, it is necessary to plan more and think ahead. It’s good to keep in mind that Windows doesn’t see Linux disks. Therefore, in addition to the regular partitions for Linux and Windows, I recommend inserting one more section. This space will be used for data sharing between systems. The partition will be in NTFS format. Of course, you need to have enough disk space on the shared partition. However, if you run out of space, you can skip it. The sample example assumes a disk with a capacity of 1 TB.

I recommend that you schedule partitions taking your disk space into account. In addition to the optimal plan, prepare a backup that takes into account the least acceptable reduction of the Windows partition. It will make further decisions easier if the disk shrinking process does not work optimally. To reduce the likelihood that you will have to reinstall everything if something fails, I recommend that you perform all the backups listed in Chapter Three.

In the next chapter we will create a USB bootable media.
