We analyze the Ford Puma 2022

I just proved that the leg is stronger than the thumb Ellie (It Happened One Night, 1934)

Quarter to three, I stop the car. I park carefully. I walk through the park. The hedges have been trimmed. Bad, as always. There is a puddle because they have just watered. I avoid them very carefully. I must not touch the water. The birds take refuge under the leaves of the aspen. They stare at me. I stop to watch them. After a moment they take flight. I keep walking. I see one, two, three benches. Only one of them is occupied, by a couple. Each of them is looking at the screen of his personal device. But they are holding hands. Maybe they are friends. From time to time one laughs. They never do it at the same time. A guy drives by with his two-wheeler and his fat belly. He clumsily turns some pedals. With a lot of effort. A girl is lying on the grass by the chestnut trees. She is asleep. No. She looks at a book. She has long blonde hair on the grass. She turns pages slowly. I continue on my way. The fountain is dry. There is a sign on which I imagine she says that she is spoiled. Or that it is poisonous. Don’t know. Because I’m not from here. I do not understand the language. I come across two old men who are chatting. Or they may be arguing. One stops to gesture. The other looks at him. With your arms behind your back. I don’t know what she is describing because I don’t understand them. The other shakes his head. They get angry again. I think.

Flowers. Flowers always puzzle me. I have to go light next to the tulips. I know that if I stay to watch them I will do so for a long time. And the insects. I hear you. I always feel a deep familiarity with them. Although there are less and less. Much less. I reach the park gate on the other side. There is a policeman with a bored face. He is also looking at the device in his hand. He looks up. He watches me for a few seconds and then stops. Four crimes are being committed in this park right now. He does not know it. I leave the park and turn right. I walk the fence of the park. In the sky there are big fluffy clouds. The sky has a light blue color that almost dazzles because of that single sun. Too close. There are birds nestled on the last stretch of the park fence. I think they are the same birds that I first came across. I look at them again. Yes, they are the same. I continue on my way. They follow me with their eyes. I look at them as I walk. For a few moments. We watch each other. Then I turn my back on them. I hear how they take flight. Obviously they realize it. that they know But it does not matter. They can not do anything. Tomorrow won’t matter. In my bracelet I feel a vibration. They are very close now.

The Ford Puma was born way back in 1997 and was initially designed as a small, affordable hatchback coupe based on the Ford Fiesta. At that time the competition presented its own affordable coupes and Ford did not want to be left behind and launched its proposal with a feline name and a body with a groundbreaking design for the time that adopted some aesthetic elements of the “peculiar” Ford Ka that had been launched a year before. It could be said that the evolution of the Puma has gone hand in hand with the market and now Ford has reused the model name for a sporty car but with a crossover body.

It is a car with which Ford aspires to succeed in the European market with the growing demand for compact SUVs, with dimensions that allow it to move freely in cities, with maximized interior space thanks to the raised bodywork and with dynamic qualities that can allow you to move freely on the road. Ford’s bet is completed with a range of modern gasoline engines with mild hybridization, except in the case of the 200-horsepower version that, as we have said, we were able to test.

sporty design

The design of the Puma is that of an SUV that, however, does not have the height of other competing models, so it falls halfway between the bodywork of a passenger car and that of a cross-over. The front has been designed with sporty details in which the teardrop-shaped headlights placed very high on the car’s hood or the wide central grille made up of black hexagonal elements and a second trapezoidal grille in the lower part that stand out above all stand out. It is finished off by a prominent spoiler.

The front bumper has a multitude of volumes and elements such as the fog lights embedded in the sides and different decorative moldings that give the nose of this small Forf a more dynamic look. This sporty design adopted especially in this front part of the Puma is a nod that takes us back to the design of the original Puma in which the resemblance to its unmistakable headlights that are reminiscent of those of this model stands out.

The side draws the profile of an SUV lower than what the competition offers, a compromise between tourism and SUV that nevertheless sports an aerodynamic silhouette. The five-spoke wheels give this small crossover a sporty touch that underlines the lines of the body by imitating it with the shape of the side windows, which narrow at the rear. The sides also have reliefs on the doors and wheel arches to give another dynamic touch to the whole.

At the rear we see a raised gate that divides the optical groups in two when it is opened. The rear window slopes down in a curve at the bottom to add a bit of visibility. Sporty touches with the upper spoiler supported by two black side supports and a wide bumper full of elements and volumes. The exhaust pipe is simple and is covered by a black plastic trim that occupies the lower part.

sporty finish

Inside we can immediately appreciate that we are facing a sporty Puma finish. The seats are specially designed, more enveloping and with a combination of synthetic leather and fabric as well as red stitching. This same color is found in the seams of the steering wheel, the padding of the doors and the trims of the air outlets of the ventilation system. The design of the seats makes them both comfortable and very well supported in curves, somewhat smaller than the Recaro seats of the ST model.

On the dashboard we find hard plastic areas combined with others with imitation carbon fiber. They are correct and well assembled finishes, although with a step below other somewhat more sophisticated compact SUVs from the competition. The information and entertainment system has a screen that is placed on the dashboard and offers a series of buttons that allow direct access to certain functions without having to access the menus through the touch screen.

The indicators behind the steering wheel have been replaced by a 12.3-inch screen that we can configure with limitations to show the information that interests us. The appearance of the instrumentation changes its appearance as we choose the different driving modes. Thus, in sport mode, the instrumentation is presented in red and will imitate the analog dials of this type of vehicle in addition to showing the letter S so that we can know which driving mode we have selected.

In our unit, the Ford Puma had a wireless charger for the mobile phone in the space in front of the gear lever, in which the device is not visible. It’s a little small for a certain size model and not powerful enough to charge the cased phone but otherwise well protected by a plastic non-slip mat. The central armrest has a USB connection for charging devices and a fairly deep storage compartment.

In the back, the seats are narrow for three occupants, something common in cars of this size. There is less space than usual both in height and for the legs if the occupants of the front seats have a certain height and move the seat backwards. The trunk is one of the most spacious in its category with 401 liters that can be increased to 1,161 if we lower the rear row of seats. It has a tray that can be placed at different heights and a very large hole under the floor.

We have already had the opportunity to test the Puma in its most extreme version, the ST. On this occasion we have chosen a variant also with sports aspirations but somewhat more civilized with 155 horsepower from 1.0 liters and with micro-hybrid technology, which is worth the DGT ECO label. With regard to the transmission, the model we tested had a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. Good credentials for dynamic driving.

jolly engine

We already had the opportunity to test the 155-horsepower engine in the Fiesta, but we must take into account the more than 100 kilos difference from the Puma to measure performance. In fact, in the Puma file that we have tested, it takes a tenth of a second more than the party to reach 100 kilometers per hour from a standstill. It is not a big difference but it is clear that the behavior of the car is going to be different.

In urban driving the behavior of the Puma is impeccable. It is quite quiet at low revs and with enough power reserve for any urban task. In addition, consumption, thanks also to the small help of the electric motor, is quite restrained for a car of this power. The maneuverability is favored by the driving assistance systems and the compact size of the car as well as good visibility, although somewhat less than that of the Fiesta.

On twisty roads is where we notice some more difference. Not in the power delivery, since the difference in weight is barely noticeable when accelerating and recovering, but in the most twisty areas. It is true that the stiffened suspension makes the car behave with agility, but the feel of the Fiesta has seemed somewhat more agile. Another point in which they are distinguished is that when we go up in revolutions, the Puma is somewhat noisier than the Fiesta, especially in Sport mode.

As with the Fiesta, the Start and Stop system that stops the engine when the car is stopped works very well, thanks again to the electric motor. On motorway routes it also contributes to moderate consumption with the car launched. Fuel economy can be great over similarly featured models that aren’t true hybrids. The smoothness of the ride we liked a lot, although the aerodynamic noise partially harms the comfort.

The Puma is a very well conceived and designed compact SUV, with an obvious nod to the past that makes it retain some sporting hallmarks that are underlined in the ST-Line version. The adoption of a micro-hybrid engine makes it a particularly versatile car, capable of consuming little in normal conditions but behaving like a sports car if we want to brighten up our day, thanks also to the prepared suspensions and the Sport mode.

It is a practical car with a good trunk and good finishes that, however, has not fully taken advantage of the SUV body to provide more spacious rear seats. The behavior of the car is really fun and closely resembles the Fiesta despite the increased weight and height. It could be said that in this section they are comparable, so only the design and the price could be factors to opt for one over the other.

Final assessment

An SUV that has the soul of sports tourism with good design and performance and very good consumption. Versatile and modern, it is a good choice for both city and travel.
