watching illegal channels should be imprisoned for 2 years

This is a matter not only of economic interests, but also of national security, protection of the information space, said the chairman of the Seimas subcommittee on strategic communication Ajnars Latkovskis, proposing to criminalize the installation of systems for the illegal viewing of banned audiovisual programmes, reports NRA. According to the politician, the police should work more actively in this direction.

As previously reported, in March the Saeima adopted amendments to the Protected Services Act. The police received the right to fine viewers for watching television channels banned in Latvia. The maximum fine for such a violation is 700 euros.

However, developments in Ukraine have convinced some lawmakers that such measures are not enough, according to the NRA. In this regard, Latkovskis proposes to supplement the Criminal Law with a norm according to which criminal liability will be introduced for the installation of systems that allow illegal viewing of prohibited audiovisual programs – up to two years in prison.

True, the deputy head of the department for combating cybercrime of the State Police, who was present at the meeting of the subcommittee Ruslan Griggs acknowledged that this initiative needed further discussion, pointing out that due to the specificity of criminal practice in this area, it may be difficult to collect enough evidence to bring the case to trial.
