Washington: Wild fox kills 25 zoo flamingos

A wild fox has entered a bird enclosure at the National Zoo in Washington, DC, killing 25 American flamingos and a pintail duck. Three other flamingos were injured and are being treated at the animal hospital, the zoo said on Tuesday.

“This is a heartbreaking loss for us and for everyone who cares about our animals.” Employees discovered the dead animals early Monday morning and spotted a fox in the outdoor enclosure. The fox then escaped.

The enclosure was last checked on Sunday afternoon, the report said. On Monday, a new hole was found in the metal grille on the outside.

Live traps have been placed around the outside area to catch any predators. In addition, camera traps with infrared sensors were set up to record nocturnal activities. (dpa)
