VW Project Trinity will be delayed by 2-4 years, there may not even be a new factory

Most of the time people make fun of Tesla for the huge delays in their projects, and in most cases they are right. As with almost everything, the same can apply to its competition, as the German automaker is now showing Volkswagen. It is preparing a new electric vehicle platform and it was supposed to be one of the cars Project Trinity. But this car will definitely not appear in the light of the world in 2026, as planned by the former CEO of the company, Herbert Diess. But the management of Volkswagen let it be known that the car will be postponed for at least 2 years, if not more. Today, the more likely launch years are 2028 to 2030.

Another step back is the planned factory in Wolfsburg. Diess himself admitted half a year ago that Tesla is moving forward 2 times faster than the competition. One of the steps to catch up was to build a new factory for 2 billion euros, which would eliminate the disadvantages of the original one. While Tesla’s Gigafactory (not Fremont, which took over from GM and Toyota) are integrated factories where everything happens simply under one roof, older car factories are usually made up of many disparate units in a multi-building complex, which complicates production. It is slower, more expensive and less efficient.

But it looks like with the switch to electric mobility, VW will slow down production of internal combustion engine cars, leaving more room for electric car production in the old original factories. The new factory, which was supposed to start construction next year and be finished in 2026, will probably not be built at all, and Volkswagen will continue to make cars in older and less efficient factories.
