Vox Torrelodones tries to censor a report on plasma donation in the municipal magazine because its protagonist talks about her “husband”

The municipal group Vox in the Torrelodones City Council wanted to censor the word “husband”, in a report on the donation of hyperimmune plasma by former coronavirus patients to contribute to their cure, which will be published in the January issue of the municipal magazine . The term was used by Víctor Ibáñez, who works as an advisor to the local PSOE, to refer to his spouse, who was also affected by the disease.

As it is a man who talks about her husband, the far-right party wanted to change him to “partner” with the argument that this term “consciously diverts the reader’s attention.” This is stated in an email that Vox sent to the rest of the groups and that the PSOE has collected in a statement. “I asked twice to the representative of this formation in the Media Committee if they would ask for this modification if I put a wife instead of a husband and both times she said no,” says Ibáñez in conversation with elDiario.es.

For Vox, that Ibáñez speaks of her husband responds to “political interests”, because, as reflected in the mail of the extreme right formation cited by the socialists, it entails “the absolutely political and ideological use” of the report and is a way to govern “in favor of a specific group, the LGTBI group.”

“To say that it is a political use is incredible,” says Ibáñez. “What’s more, as I asked the Vox representative in the Media Committee if the same would happen if I had put ‘my wife’, the minutes will reflect that the only problem they have is that I refer I am married to another man. In my town, that is called homophobia. ”

It all started at the Media Committee meeting in December. This body is made up of a representative from each municipal group —ediles or his advisers, as in the case of Ibáñez— and the Councilor for Communication, Jesús Moreno, and expresses his opinion on the publication, viewing the contents or sharing ideas.

At the December meeting, Ibáñez – who passed the coronavirus in March – said that he was going to test a program that had been launched in Madrid to donate hyperimmune plasma and be able to contribute in the search for a remedy for this disease. He did it without any intention of publishing it, but all his colleagues without exception asked him to tell about his experience in the next municipality magazine, so that neighbors who were in the same situation would be encouraged to repeat that gesture.

Like every month, this week the Media Committee met again to see how the magazine was. When seeing the report, it was when the representative of Vox asked that the term husband be changed to that of partner. “I said no. I am married to a man and my husband is a husband,” says Ibáñez. “I also stressed that if it was decided to remove the word husband, I would not give my permission to publish the story, because he is an indisputable part,” he continues.

“All the issues that have been published in the magazines have come out by majority,” according to Jesús Moreno, Councilor for Communication by Neighbors for Torrelodones, and one of those responsible for the publication. The mayor tells elDiario.es in a telephone conversation that when Vox tried to change the word husband to partner, as with all proposals, he gave his opinion, but it was not necessary to vote. Except for the formation of the extreme right, the rest of the councilors were against it. Therefore, he confirms, the report “is going to come out as is.” “The proposal was rejected by the rest of the members and there is nothing more to say,” he adds.

After this week’s meeting, the municipal group once again insisted on this change, even though it had already been rejected. He did it through an email, according to Moreno. In it, they asked to publish an article together with the same report explaining their position, something that has been rejected. “If they wanted to do it in this number, they could through the pages that each group has reserved (two in each publication). If not, they have been personally urged that if they wish to make their point of view known, send, like any other another neighbor, a letter to the director and it will be published in the next “.

“The email does not surprise me because it is not the first time that these gentlemen show off their homophobia,” says Ibáñez, who gives examples such as the intervention of the Vox spokesperson in a plenary session last July in the debate on exemptions from the IBI to large families. Then, another PSOE councilor said that he believed that other family models had to be taken into account. There, the formation expressed that for them, the family is “a father, a mother and their children and everything that comes out of there are inventions of their own, of their party, of the communist left.”

“For me this situation is not pleasant at all because it affects my personal life and I have told it because I believe that it is part of a story that should be told,” says the socialist advisor, thanking the rest of the groups that have opposed the Vox proposal.

To questions from elDiario.es, a Vox spokesman in Torrelodones refused to explain why the party requested that change and limited himself to stating that in their political formation they “do not know” how the report has finally been. In addition, he stressed that the matter “has come from a confidential body.” Meanwhile, in their social networks, they have accused both the PSOE and Neighbors for Torrelodones of “transmitting totally distorted facts to public opinion, to deceive the neighbors.”
