Von der Leyen favors agreement between UK and Frontex agency – Europe

The President of the European Commission communicated today to the British Prime Minister the support of the community executive for the conclusion of an agreement between the United Kingdom and the European Border and Coast Guard Agency (Frontex).

The message was transmitted by Von der Leyen to Rishi Sunak on the sidelines of the summit of leaders of the Council of Europe, in Reykjavik, with the German politician publishing a message on twitter expressing “the European Commission’s support for a future operational agreement between the United Kingdom and Frontex”.

During the summit, the British prime minister defended the need to reform the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) to make it more “transparent”, after the court blocked deportations to Rwanda of asylum seekers in the United Kingdom.

“We want to ensure that the European court behaves fairly, effectively and transparently,” Sunak told reporters in Reikjavik.

The British Prime Minister defends the amendment of an article of the rules of the Strasbourg Court that allows judges to take urgent precautionary measures and that served the ECHR to block the first flight with deportees to Rwanda that was due to take off from British territory.

Sunak stressed that the UK has a “long record” of initiatives to reform the European court and that it will “continue on this path in the future”.

During the summit, the head of the British Government met with the President of the ECHR, Siofra O’Leary, to whom he paid tribute for her role in judging cases of “alleged violations of human rights in Russia”.
