Volvo gets the green light to do like Tesla

Volvo’s application to start megacasting has now been approved by the Land and Environment Court. A process that Tesla has used since last year.

The Land and Environmental Court has approved Volvo to use its huge die-casting machines to simplify the manufacturing process, reports Gothenburg Post. The technology has been used by Tesla since last year in the production of the Model Y.

The approval now means that Volvo can use die casting to shorten and simplify the manufacture of certain components. For example, the entire rear floor can now be cast in one piece of aluminum in just a few minutes, something that previously had to be assembled from several hundred pieces.

Not just coming the process shortened and simplified, it should also make the final product easier and possibly safer. But it will take a few years. The technology will first be used in production in the middle of the decade.

Tidigare this year announced Volvo that they are expanding and upgrading the factory in Torslanda, partly to be able to handle the die-casting equipment. The cost of the entire party must have been SEK 10 billion. This is not long after Volvo, together with Northvolt, invested SEK 30 billion in the development and manufacture of customized high-quality batteries for Volvo’s next generation of electric cars.

In connection with Volvo’s announcement about the investmentgen spoke out also the former boss Håkan Samuelsson about the venture.

With these investments, we are taking an important step towards our all-electric future and preparing us for even more advanced and better electric Volvo cars, on Samuelsson.
