A large fire broke out Sunday morning at the South African parliament building in Cape Town.
“The roof is on fire, and the National Assembly building is also engulfed in flames,” a Cape Town fire department spokesman said.
“The fire is not yet under control and cracks have been reported in the walls of the building,” he added.
The fire started spreading around 03:30 GMT. Early in the morning, flames and a column of smoke could be seen above the building.
Cape Town was already the victim of a serious fire in April last year, when flames destroyed part of the library of the prestigious university in this South African city.
