(VIDEO) Irina Begu, great victory! Three Romanians in the second round

Irina Begu qualified for the second round of the US Open on Tuesday night after knocking out one of the favourites, Belgian Elise Mertens, ending an impressive run for the Belgian.

Irina Begu prevailed with the score of 3-6, 6-2, 6-3, at the end of a match that lasted two hours and 25 minutes of play.

American journalist Ben Rothenberg appreciated the victory achieved by Irina Begu, pointing out that it is actually a really substantial success, even if it might not seem so given the lack of balance in women’s world tennis: “IC Begu defeats Elise Mertens, ending the Belgian’s remarkable streak of 18 consecutive qualifiers into at least the third round at Grand Slams. In this era of women’s tennis, a rare and underrated performance,” said Rothenberg, quoted by Eurosport.

It was the Romanian’s first victory over Mertens. Next, Irina Begu will duel with the Chinese Yue Yuan

Also on Tuesday evening, Sorana Cîrstea qualified for the second round of the US Open tournament, after defeating the German Laura Siegemund 6-4, 6-4, on Tuesday, in New York.

Cîrstea will meet the Swiss Belinda Bencic in the second round.

Previously, Gabriela Ruse entered the second round, while Simona Halep and Jaqueline Cristian were eliminated.
