“The popularity of teacher and IT study programs has increased this year. During the general admission, the study programs preparing these specialists were considered a priority – they sought to accept all ready and motivated applicants. We especially sought to attract as many new students as possible to the study programs of the pedagogic specializations that are most lacking in our schools, and we will encourage those enrolled with scholarships,” says Vice Minister of Education, Science and Sports Gintautas Jakštas.
More educators will be trained
This year, study programs in educational sciences received more attention from applicants – this year, as many as 1,740 students (1,546 in 2021) took part in the assessment of motivation, which is necessary when applying for study programs providing teacher qualifications. Of these, 1,695 received a positive evaluation of motivation (1,478 in 2021).
A total of 1,084 first-year students signed contracts to study under the pedagogy study program, 621 of them for a place financed by the state. Interest in the teaching profession in the country is growing consistently: in 2021 989 such contracts were concluded in 2020. – 901.
440 freshmen (in 2021 – 354) signed contracts to study priority pedagogic specializations – pedagogy of primary education, special pedagogy, mathematics, Lithuanian language and literature, physics, chemistry, biology, technology, history, geography.
Interest in social, special pedagogy has grown in particular: almost twice as many first-year students have been admitted to state-funded places in these studies at Vytautas the Great and Vilnius Universities than last year (84 in 2022, 45 in 2021). It is special pedagogy specialists in Lithuanian schools that are currently in dire need: according to the Employment Service, this is the only specialization in which there were more job vacancies for pedagogues than job seekers in the summer.
Scholarships in the amount of 299 euros will be paid monthly to those enrolled in the state-funded bachelor’s pedagogic studies of these most necessary specializations and pedagogical associate studies during all studies.
The professional studies of the group of people who have chosen educational sciences are also growing rapidly. According to preliminary data, almost 400 entrants are expected to be admitted to them this year (210 in 2021) – admission to each higher education institution took place directly. Persons who have already obtained a bachelor’s degree in any field are admitted to professional studies in pedagogy. Graduates acquire the qualification of pedagogue, which entitles them to work in educational institutions. Professional studies in pedagogy last 1-1.5 years.
In order to encourage more entrants to choose the specialty of pedagogue and provide the opportunity to study for free, as well as to help solve the problem of the shortage of pedagogues in the country’s schools, the Government increased the number of state-funded places in pedagogical professional studies this year – 385 of them were allocated. For comparison, last year there were 200 state-financed places in these studies.
For those who signed employment contracts – a stipend of 506 euros
Students of priority specializations in pedagogical professional studies and final year bachelor’s pedagogic studies and pedagogical associate studies have the opportunity to increase their scholarships to 506 euros. Increased scholarships will be available to those who have a contract with the municipality, municipal or public school and are committed to working there for at least 3 years in a 5-year period, at least 0.7 full-time, after graduation.
The contract can be initiated by a student, a school or municipality, and a higher education institution. Applications are accepted by the State Study Fund until September 30. and October 5-25
