Due to a shortage of donated blood, in the near future, the country’s hospitals may cancel all operations altogether – the situation is critical: the blood bank is rapidly emptying, according to the State Blood Donor Center (VADC).

As the head of the Department of blood preparation of the Daugavpils regional hospital Ilona Skrinda, all blood types are now needed, and residents are encouraged to donate to save the lives of others.

You can donate blood in Daugavpils in the Central Polyclinic (5 Viestura Street) from monday to thursday from 8:00 to 10:00. Before your visit to the Blood Preparation Department, you are asked to call in advance and make an appointment by phone 654 05323.

As Ilona Skrinda explained, both those vaccinated against coronavirus and those who have recovered from it can become donors, a week after vaccination and at the end of the disease.

Before donating blood, the donor’s hemoglobin level must be checked: for women, the norm is 125 g / l, for men – 135 g / l. In summer, in very hot weather, like now, hemoglobin can be low due to high water consumption. According to Ilona Skrind, it is for this reason that about 2-3 people out of 20 donors are often recalled.

According to Ilona Skrinda, in DRB, it is not uncommon for relatives, relatives and friends of a person in need of blood transfusion to become donors for him – rather, this is even moral support for a loved one in trouble.

A person can become a donor:
• at the age of 18 to 65;
• with a weight of at least 50 kg;
• the day before donating blood, you should not drink alcohol;
• you need to feel good;
• adhere to a healthy diet and drink plenty of fluids;
• do not donate blood for at least 9 weeks.

When donating blood, you must have an identity document with you – a passport or ID-card.

As compensation for the restoration of health, all donors receive after donating blood cash supplement for lunch in the amount of 4.27 euros and 5 euros (for those declared on the territory of Daugavpils) or 6 euros (for those declared on the territory of the Augshdaugava region, which now unites the Daugavpils and Ilukste regions).

It is worth remembering that all information about the donor’s health is strictly confidential. According to the Labor Law of the Republic of Lithuania, the donor is entitled to a paid day off after donating blood, which can be used throughout the year.

Men can donate blood up to 6 times a year, women – up to 4 times, observing an interval of at least 9 weeks between each donation.

Don’t be indifferent, donate your blood and your time! Indeed, often the blood of even one donor can save the lives of three people at once!
