The press service of the Russian Premier League (RPL) said that Ural proposed to expand the number of teams in the 2023/24 season from 16 to 18.

“The RPL received a letter from FC Ural with a proposal to expand the number of league participants in the 2023/2024 season. This issue will be considered on June 20 at the general meeting of RPL clubs in absentia. If approved by the majority of the clubs, the initiative will be submitted for consideration by the executive committee of the Russian Football Union in order to decide on the format of the 2023/2024 season before the start of the RPL season 2022-2024,” the press service of the RPL reports.

The format under discussion assumes that at the end of the 2022/23 season there will be play-offs between the last two places of the Russian Championship with third and fourth places in the FNL.

Recall that on May 18, the RPL clubs decided to maintain the current format with the addition of the League Cup for the 2022/23 season.

Earlier, the President of the Russian Football Union, Alexander Dyukov, explained in which case he would approve the expansion of the RPL.
