United Nations Police Chief meeting with Inspector General of Bangladesh Police

Inspector General of Bangladesh Police on Friday at the United Nations headquarters in New York. A bilateral meeting between Benazir Ahmed and United Nations Police Chief Luis Liberio Carrilho has been held. A press release received in Dhaka today also stated that various matters of mutual interest were discussed in this sincere meeting.

Mentioning Bangladesh as one of the major contributors of police personnel to UN peacekeeping operations, the UN Police Chief acknowledged the contribution of the Bangladesh Police Force in peacekeeping and praised the professionalism and dedication of the policemen.

He specifically mentioned the high professionalism and sense of responsibility that he saw in Bangladesh policemen while serving as police commissioner in East Timor and Haiti.

Besides, the UN police chief also praised the professionalism of the Bangladeshi policemen working in the UN peacekeeping mission in Mali and Congo.

He mentioned that Bangladesh has been deploying women policemen in peacekeeping operations which is an important step in the empowerment of women and establishment of gender equality.

Benazir Ahmed said, Bangladesh Police is always ready to respond to any need of UN peacekeeping operations.
The IGP requested the deployment of skilled and professional specialized units of the Bangladesh Police, especially in the management of dangerous peacekeeping operations in Africa.

In this regard, he highlighted Bangladesh’s capabilities in deploying various specialized units including SWAT, canine, riverine and guard police and forensic units and organizing various programs and training for the UN Police.

The IGP requested the appointment of high-ranking Bangladeshi police officers at the UN headquarters and at the field level of peacekeeping operations.

The IGP highlighted the significant contribution of Bangladesh Police in various fields including implementation of SDGs, climate change, empowerment of women, establishment of human rights and rule of law under the leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

The meeting also discussed the supply of necessary equipment from the Bangladesh Police Force for the peacekeeping mission.
The UN Police Chief also expressed hope that Bangladesh Police will continue to provide maximum cooperation in UN peacekeeping operations in the coming days.

Referring to the special importance of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina regarding UN peacekeeping activities and global cooperation, Dr. Benazir Ahmed reiterated the commitment of Bangladesh Police to continue cooperation in UN peacekeeping.

In the meeting, the military advisor of the United Nations Bangladesh Permanent Mission, Brigadier General Md. Sadekuzzaman and Additional DIG of Overseas and UN Operations Wing of Police Headquarters Nasian Wazed were present.
